Thiruvananthapuram, March 13: Recent electoral trends may seem favorable for the opposition in Kerala, but the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] expressed confidence on Friday that the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) will return to power with a significant majority in the upcoming assembly elections.
This assertion was made by CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan during a media interaction. He stated that the process of finalizing LDF candidates is nearly complete, and their names will be announced once the election schedule is declared.
However, this claim comes at a time when the Left Front, particularly the CPI(M), has made bold assertions after nearly every election since the 2021 assembly polls, yet the electoral atmosphere has often appeared to favor the Congress-led opposition.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the LDF managed to secure victory in only one of Kerala’s 20 seats. Subsequent by-elections also saw the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) winning all but one seat.
Before the local body elections held in December, the Left Front had reiterated its confidence in maintaining its dominance, but the results showed a stellar performance by the Congress-led UDF. Party leaders described it as one of their best showings in the history of local body elections in Kerala.
Despite these setbacks, Govindan asserted that the upcoming assembly election will bring a decisive mandate in favor of the LDF.
He also criticized the central government’s foreign policy, alleging that India’s growing closeness to the United States undermines the country’s sovereignty and self-reliance.
According to Govindan, this shift in policy began during the Congress-led governments and has been aggressively pursued by the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) administration.
He noted that India’s traditional foreign policy has been to oppose American imperialism, but changes began during former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao’s tenure, leading India closer to the U.S.
Govindan further stated that during that period, diplomatic relations with Israel were restored, and through the nuclear agreement, India compromised its self-reliance and sovereignty, becoming a junior partner to the U.S.
He emphasized that India once adopted a non-aligned stance against U.S. war policies, but now the country appears to be fully aligned with the U.S., which he termed a dangerous situation.
