Special Session of Tripura Assembly Scheduled for April 30 to Discuss Womens Reservation

Agartala, April 23: A special session of the Tripura Assembly will be held on April 30 to discuss the issue of women’s reservation and to pass a related resolution. This information was shared by state government officials on Thursday.

Assembly Secretary Amia Kanti Nath announced that the 9th session of the 13th Tripura Assembly, which was previously adjourned indefinitely, will reconvene on April 30. He mentioned that Assembly Speaker Ram Pada Jamatiya has decided to call the second phase of the house meeting on the same day.

According to Nath, this session began on March 13 and was adjourned indefinitely on March 23.

Parliamentary Affairs and Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated that a detailed discussion on women’s reservation will take place on April 30, followed by the passing of a resolution in the Assembly. He also noted that similar special sessions will be held in other BJP-ruled states, where resolutions on the same topic are likely to be passed.

This special session comes in the wake of the failure to pass the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 in Parliament on April 17. This bill pertains to providing 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies until 2029.

Following the bill’s failure in Parliament, the BJP has initiated a “Jan Aakrosh Padayatra” across various parts of the country, accusing opposition parties, including Congress, Trinamool Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, and leftist parties, of opposing women’s reservation.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha described April 17 as a “black day for Indian democracy,” stating that the opposition’s stance reveals its attitude towards women.

He asserted that the failure to pass the women’s reservation bill reflects the opposition’s “anti-women mindset” and marks a “sad chapter” for democracy. The Chief Minister also claimed that the opposition’s stance will have political repercussions, and women will respond in the upcoming elections.
