Political Turmoil in Meghalaya: BJP Reaches Out to Former CM Mukul Sangma

Shillong, April 23: In a significant development in Meghalaya’s political landscape, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again initiated contact with former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition, Mukul Sangma. Senior party legislator A.L. Hek stated on Thursday that they plan to invite Sangma to join the BJP.

Hek revealed that the BJP is actively reaching out to influential leaders from various parties to expand its base in the state. He claimed that several current legislators are also in touch with the party, indicating potential shifts in the state’s political dynamics ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.

According to the BJP leader, Mukul Sangma has not outright rejected the proposal but has requested time to consider it. “We have decided to give him time and will reach out again at an appropriate moment,” he said.

Sangma is regarded as one of the most influential leaders in Meghalaya, and many political parties have been eyeing him in recent months. His next move could play a crucial role in shaping the direction of state politics.

In 2021, Sangma left the Congress party to join the Trinamool Congress. Sources indicate that he is currently assessing the political landscape and is in contact with leaders from Congress and other parties.

There are also speculations that he may consider forming a new regional party, although no official confirmation has been made regarding this.

Meanwhile, A.L. Hek also claimed that at least four current legislators are in contact with the BJP and may join the party before the 2028 assembly elections, although he did not disclose any names.

The BJP is continuously working to strengthen its foothold in Meghalaya and is focusing on strategies to align with influential leaders. Such developments could bring a new twist to the state’s politics ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
