Hussain Dalwai Supports Making Marathi Mandatory for Drivers in Maharashtra

Mumbai, April 11: Congress leader Hussain Dalwai expressed his support on Saturday for making the Marathi language mandatory for auto and taxi drivers in Maharashtra.

In an interview with a news agency, Dalwai stated, “I don’t see anything wrong with this. If you want to live in Maharashtra, you should know Marathi. If you have a Marathi relative, you should speak to them in Marathi. If you don’t know the language, learn it. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

He emphasized that protecting local language and culture is the right of every state, and there should be no objections to it.

Commenting on the Bombay High Court reprimanding the Maharashtra government regarding the Ladli Behna scheme, Dalwai argued that instead of merely providing financial aid to women, the government should create job opportunities for them. He remarked, “In my view, this is wrong. It could lead to economic issues. This problem was anticipated; it’s not surprising.”

On the issue of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Dalwai criticized the BJP, saying, “These are just empty assurances. What happened to the promises made during the 2014 elections? People are being deliberately divided over UCC, CAA, NRC, etc. How will you implement the UCC? Tell me.”

Dalwai pointed out that the government has failed to fulfill the promises made in its election manifesto and is now trying to divert attention by raising new issues.

Regarding the peace talks between the U.S. and Iran in Pakistan, Dalwai questioned the central government’s foreign policy. He stated, “How can Pakistan be a harbinger of peace? There are always problems there, but Pakistan got this role because our government took a wrong step. Why did the Prime Minister visit Israel just two days before the war began?”

He criticized the central government’s foreign policy as inconsistent and chaotic, which is damaging India’s international image. Overall, Congress leader Hussain Dalwai launched a broad attack on the policies of both the central and Maharashtra governments, claiming that the public is being misled in the name of development.
