New Delhi, April 23: Senior BJP leader Pravesh Wahi submitted his nomination for the position of Mayor of the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) on Thursday. He filed his nomination papers at the civic center’s office of the municipal secretary in preparation for the upcoming mayoral elections.
Currently, Wahi serves as the leader of the house in the MCD. During his tenure, he has successfully bridged the gap between BJP leadership and councilors. Present at the nomination event were several senior BJP leaders, including Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, house leader and standing committee candidate Jai Bhagwan Yadav, standing committee chairperson Satya Sharma, deputy mayor candidate Monica Pant, and Rajpal Rana.
On the same day, the BJP officially announced Pravesh Wahi as their candidate for mayor and Monica Pant for deputy mayor. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has chosen not to contest the mayoral elections this time, making Wahi’s victory seem almost certain.
After filing his nomination, Wahi stated that he aims to expedite all development plans in collaboration with the Delhi government. He expressed gratitude to the central government, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi BJP, and the supporting councilors. Wahi emphasized that addressing issues related to civic amenities in Delhi will be his top priority.
He also mentioned that the welfare schemes and policies included in the current fiscal year’s budget of the MCD will be implemented effectively. Special attention will be given to improving roads, water supply, sewage, sanitation, and other essential services.
Pravesh Wahi is an experienced leader in municipal politics, serving as a councilor from Rohini E Ward (Ward No. 56). He has been elected as a councilor three times from various wards since 2007 and has also held the position of zone chairman three times. Additionally, he successfully led the standing committee of North MCD during the 2016-17 term.
Wahi has been associated with the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and has actively contributed to BJP activities since 1980. He served as the mandal president from 2004 to 2007. He is a graduate from Delhi University and hails from a Punjabi Khatri family.
Leaders present at the nomination expressed confidence that Wahi’s election as mayor would enhance coordination between the Delhi government and the corporation, leading to improved services for citizens and accelerated development work.
According to BJP sources, Wahi’s strong administrative acumen and extensive experience in the corporation make him a suitable candidate for the position. Following AAP’s decision to abstain from the elections, Wahi is likely to be elected unopposed.
