Lucknow, May 17: Tensions erupted in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday as the municipal corporation initiated a bulldozer operation against alleged illegal lawyer chambers and shops outside the district court. This action was carried out under the directives of the Allahabad High Court, accompanied by a heavy police presence.
According to officials, approximately 240 illegal chambers and shops near the civil court and district magistrate’s office were demolished as part of an anti-encroachment campaign. Bulldozers were deployed, and a significant police force, including the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), was present for security.
Lawyers strongly opposed the bulldozer action, leading to clashes and heated exchanges between the protesting lawyers and police personnel. Lawyers at the scene were seen chanting slogans against the administration, attempting to halt the demolition.
In a dramatic turn of events, a lawyer reportedly attempted suicide in protest. Fortunately, police intervened in time to ensure their safety. This incident heightened tensions, prompting the administration to deploy additional security forces.
Many lawyers accused the administration of conducting the demolition without proper notice or rehabilitation arrangements. Protester S.P. Singh stated, “I am a Thakur, part of Yogi’s community. I have voted for the BJP all my life, but after today, I will not vote for them again. We received no notice, nor were our chambers identified.”
Another lawyer expressed dissent in a unique manner, singing patriotic songs amid the bulldozer action to voice their frustration against the administration.
However, police officials maintained that the entire operation was conducted in accordance with court orders and legal procedures. DCP Crime Kamlesh Dixit stated that the orders for demolition had been issued previously and notices had been served.
He remarked, “We had orders for removal of encroachments. The action is being taken accordingly. Notices were issued earlier, and the operation is in compliance with regulations.”
Officials noted that these illegally constructed structures on public land outside the court complex were causing traffic jams and disorder in the area.
Tensions persisted in the region for several hours, although no major injuries were reported. Senior administrative and police officials continued to monitor the situation, while protesting lawyers demanded a halt to the action and sought dialogue with the administration.
