Odisha Police Launches Statewide Campaign Against Crime and Illegal Trade

Bhubaneswar, May 17: Odisha Police has initiated a five-day statewide campaign against crime and illegal activities from May 12 to May 16. During this operation, authorities reported the arrest of 1,771 individuals and the seizure of significant quantities of cannabis, illegal weapons, and vehicles.

The campaign was launched under the direction of Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurana. It was conducted across all ranges under the supervision of district police chiefs and commissioners.

The primary objectives of this operation included executing pending non-bailable warrants, apprehending fugitives, curbing drug trafficking, taking action against illegal mining and arms trade, and intensifying measures against drunk driving.

According to Odisha Police, throughout the five-day campaign, 1,771 individuals were arrested while executing pending warrants, and 190 fugitives were captured and presented in court.

Additionally, the police initiated action against five notorious criminals under the National Security Act (NSA). Furthermore, cases were registered against 449 habitual offenders under Section 129 of the Indian Penal Code, while actions were taken against 643 individuals under Section 126 of the BNS Act.

As part of the anti-drug campaign, police registered 31 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) and arrested 29 suspects. Law enforcement agencies confiscated 3,026 kilograms and 702 grams of cannabis, 16.6 grams of brown sugar, six vehicles, two mobile phones, and 12,348 rupees in cash.

The highest seizure of cannabis occurred in the southwestern range, where 1,943 kilograms were recovered. Following this, the southern range reported 683 kilograms, and the northern range seized 284 kilograms.

Additionally, during this campaign, 716 cases related to the excise department were registered across the state. Odisha Police also intensified actions to enforce road safety regulations. A total of 966 drivers were penalized for drunk driving, and their vehicles were seized. Traffic violations resulted in fines totaling 1.89 crore rupees.

The western range collected the highest fine amount of 53.38 lakh rupees, followed by the central range with 43.82 lakh rupees and the eastern range with 32.19 lakh rupees. In actions against illegal mining activities, police registered 136 cases and arrested 60 individuals, while notices were issued to 14 others.

Authorities also seized 179 vehicles, including Hyva, trucks, tractors, tippers, power tillers, and JCBs, which were being used for illegal mining.

The southern range arrested 22 individuals in mining-related cases, while the central range recorded 42 cases and apprehended 25 suspects.

To combat the illegal arms trade, police registered nine cases and arrested 13 individuals. During the campaign, 20 illegal weapons were confiscated.

The southern range alone seized 11 illegal weapons, while the northern range recovered six pistols and 19 live cartridges. The north-central range police also confiscated two country-made guns.

Police registered five cases related to illegal animal transport, arrested one suspect, and rescued 33 animals from four vehicles.

Across all ranges, the central range emerged as the top-performing unit in executing warrants, completing 482 during the campaign. Odisha Police stated that similar special operations will continue in the future to dismantle active criminal networks and mafias throughout the state.
