Abu Dhabi, May 17: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been informed by the United Arab Emirates that a drone attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant has not resulted in any changes in radiation levels, and everything remains normal.
According to a statement released by the Abu Dhabi Media Office on social media, the drone targeted an electrical generator located outside the internal security perimeter of the Barakah facility in the Al Dhafra region, causing a fire.
Officials at the plant reported that there were no injuries from the incident. Radiological safety levels are normal, posing no threat to the public.
The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) confirmed that the fire did not affect the safety of the nuclear plant or the functionality of its essential systems, and all units at the facility are operating normally.
Currently, Unit 3 of the plant is receiving power supply through emergency diesel generators. The IAEA stated that it is continuously monitoring the situation and is in regular contact with UAE authorities, ready to provide assistance if needed.
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that military activities jeopardizing nuclear safety are “unacceptable.” He reiterated the call for maximum military restraint around nuclear power plants to avoid the risk of a potential nuclear accident.
The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is considered the first nuclear power facility in the Arab world and plays a significant role in meeting the UAE’s electricity needs. No organization or country has claimed responsibility for the attack.
