Kolkata, May 17: Protests erupted in the Tiljala area of Kolkata on Saturday against bulldozer actions. Local residents gathered at the Park Circus Seven Point Crossing, expressing their anger over an alleged ban on offering prayers on the streets. Tensions escalated when police attempted to disperse the crowd.
During the demonstration, some protesters began throwing stones and attacking police officers. In response, law enforcement took action to restore order and clear the area. Following the incident, Kolkata police and security forces increased patrols in the surrounding streets of Suhrawardy Avenue to maintain law and order.
Additional ACP Ashesh Biswas reported that a group attempted to block the road in the Park Circus area. When police intervened, they were met with stone-throwing and aggression. Legal action has been initiated, and several arrests have been made, although the exact number of detainees remains unclear.
He also mentioned that police had received prior intelligence, which allowed for adequate security measures to be in place, preventing any major incidents. Multiple individuals have been detained, and strict legal action will be taken against those responsible.
Ashesh Biswas further stated that three police officers sustained injuries during the clashes. The police followed standard operating procedures (SOP) during the incident and are currently identifying all individuals involved. There are suspicions that both local and external individuals participated, and their identities are being verified.
