Srinagar, May 17: After 36 years, displaced Kashmiri Pandits returned to Bandipora district in Jammu and Kashmir to celebrate the ‘Sumbli Mavas’ festival on Sunday.
A significant number of displaced Kashmiri Pandits gathered at the historic Nand Kishore temple in the Sumbal area for the three-day festival. This event commemorates the birth anniversary of the revered Kashmiri Pandit saint, Maharaj Nand Kishore, attracting participants from various parts of the country.
The Sumbal area is seen as a golden opportunity for displaced Pandits to reconnect with their roots. As they met their old neighbors, barriers of religion and politics seemed to dissolve, leading to emotional reunions between Muslims and Pandits.
Many prominent Kashmiri Pandit families once owned land in Sumbal, primarily used for apple orchards. Over time, these large plots have been replaced by homes and shops. Most Kashmiri Pandit families were forced to sell their ancestral properties, while in many cases, these lands were illegally occupied during the violence in the valley.
The administration has made extensive arrangements for security and smooth conduct of the festival. Bandipora’s Deputy Commissioner, Indu Kanwal Chib, visited the temple and participated in special prayers. Meanwhile, the Senior Superintendent of Police in Bandipora assessed security measures before the festival commenced.
The deep scars of forced displacement still linger in the hearts and minds of Kashmiri Pandits. The elders of the community felt this pain most acutely in the early 1990s when the shadow of Pakistan-backed terrorism forced them to flee their homes.
Kashmiri Pandits had to leave behind their homes, land, and other properties, seeking refuge in Jammu and other parts of the country. Many have yet to return.
Currently, the Sumbal area in Bandipora is witnessing an emotional and heartwarming moment as community members gather for this special occasion.
