Kohli Sets New IPL Record as Top T20 Partnership Player

Dharamshala, May 17: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) opener Virat Kohli has achieved a significant milestone in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has now jointly topped the list for the most half-century partnerships in men’s T20 matches.

On Sunday, during the IPL 2026 match against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Kohli partnered with Devdutt Padikkal to score 76 runs off 41 balls for the second wicket. Kohli is now tied with Alex Hales, as both have participated in 210 half-century partnerships in T20 cricket. David Warner follows in second place with 200 partnerships, while Babar Azam ranks third with 196. Chris Gayle is fourth with 191 partnerships.

In the ongoing match against PBKS at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Kohli scored 58 runs off 37 balls. He is also the leading run-scorer against three different IPL teams.

Against Punjab Kings, Kohli has amassed 1,215 runs at an average of 37.15. He has scored 1,174 runs against Chennai Super Kings at an average of 37.87. Additionally, he holds the record for the most IPL runs against Delhi Capitals, with 1,172 runs at an average of 48.83.

Kohli’s name appears in the top three for the most runs scored against a single opponent in IPL history. Rohit Sharma is fourth, having scored 1,161 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders at an average of 40.03. David Warner has also made significant contributions against Punjab Kings, with 49.3 runs on average.

In the match against Punjab Kings, Kohli and Padikkal’s partnership of 76 runs places them jointly in second for the most half-century partnerships by a non-opening pair in a single IPL season.

This season, Kohli and Padikkal have achieved six half-century partnerships in nine innings. They have equaled the records set by Michael Hussey-Suresh Raina (2013) and Suryakumar Yadav-Tilak Varma (2025), both of whom also had six half-century partnerships in a single season. The record for the most half-century partnerships in a season is held by Kohli and AB de Villiers, who accomplished this feat seven times in 2016 over 13 innings.
