South Korea Demands Clarity from Iran on Attack on Cargo Ship

Seoul, May 17: South Korea has called for clarity regarding the attack on its cargo ship, the HMM Namu, in the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Minister Choi Hyun spoke with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on Sunday to address this incident.

According to the Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean Foreign Ministry reported that Choi sought Iran’s perspective and details about the attack on the cargo vessel near the Strait of Hormuz.

Choi stated that the South Korean government is conducting an additional investigation into the attack on the HMM Namu, which is operated by the South Korean shipping company HMM. He urged Iran to clarify the facts surrounding the incident.

Additionally, he emphasized the need to ensure safe and free passage for all vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, particularly South Korean ships. In response, Araghchi shared Iran’s viewpoint on the current situation in the Middle East and agreed on the necessity of restoring safe navigation in this critical waterway.

Both parties agreed to maintain close communication to ensure the safety of South Korean vessels and crew in the Strait of Hormuz.

A government investigation team had previously concluded that the HMM Namu was struck by two unidentified flying objects on May 4, resulting in an explosion and fire. All 24 crew members aboard were rescued.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israel and American allies in the Gulf region. This led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the initiation of American blockades at local ports.

A ceasefire was implemented on April 8, mediated by Pakistan, but talks in Islamabad did not reach a permanent agreement. Subsequently, U.S. President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire indefinitely.
