Udaipur, 29 July 2025 — A technical talk on “Fire Safety and Prevention Strategies” was organised by The Institution of Engineers (India), Udaipur Local Centre, aimed at raising awareness among the public and technical professionals about fire safety, prevention measures, and emergency response techniques.

Fire Safety and Prevention Strategies

Objective: Awareness and Preparedness

Welcoming the guests, Institution Chairman Er. Purushottam Paliwal explained that the session was designed to educate attendees on modern fire prevention techniques and promote effective emergency response. He provided insights on fire causes, preventive strategies, proper use of fire-fighting equipment, and the importance of prompt action during emergencies.

Causes and Prevention of Fire Accidents

Honorary Secretary Er. Piyush Javeria discussed key causes of fire accidents, ways to prevent them, and how to act swiftly during emergencies. He stressed that such public-oriented technical talks help foster safety culture and social awareness. He also highlighted the importance of proper training and awareness to avoid major disasters.

Real-Life Experience from Industry

Chief Guest Er. Shantilal Jain, Managing Director of Adarsh Engitech Projects Pvt. Ltd., shared his personal experiences from the COVID-19 period regarding oxygen supply and a fire incident at his factory. He emphasised the importance of staying calm during such situations and contacting the fire brigade and local police without panic.

Global and National Fire Statistics

Principal of Visvesvaraya Community College, Er. Abhishek Devaliya, shared global statistics, stating that around 1.8 lakh people die globally every year due to fire-related incidents, with India accounting for around 25,000 deaths annually. The economic loss in India is estimated to be over ₹1,000 crore per year. He also pointed out that in the US, industrial and manufacturing facilities face an average of 36,784 fires annually, causing significant loss of life and property.

He explained the science behind fire — a chemical reaction involving fuel, heat, and oxygen — and suggested preventive measures such as:

  • Regular maintenance of equipment

  • Safe storage of flammable substances

  • Use of fire-retardant materials

  • Proper waste disposal

  • Early detection and use of portable fire extinguishers

He stressed that most large fires start small and can be controlled early with the right tools and response.

Fire Types and First Aid

Dr. Vikas Chaudhary, Consultant Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon at RNT Medical College, spoke about fire safety and post-burn rehabilitation. He elaborated on different fire types based on their source — solid materials like wood or cloth, flammable liquids (excluding cooking oils), gases like butane or methane, burning metals like aluminium or magnesium, and electrical fires.

For home safety, he advised:

  • Keeping hot items out of children’s reach

  • Using outlet covers

  • Avoiding lifting hot items prematurely

  • Keeping electrical wires organised

First aid for burns included:

  • Cooling the burn under running water for at least 10 minutes

  • Covering the area with sterile, adhesive dressing

  • Avoiding ointments, butter, or bursting blisters

  • Calling the Blood for Sure helpline at 080 67335555 in serious cases
