Kagiso Rabada Makes IPL History with Record Wickets in Powerplay

Dharamshala, May 27: Gujarat Titans’ fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has set a new record for the most wickets taken during the powerplay in a single IPL season.

In the Qualifier 1 of IPL 2026 on Tuesday, Rabada dismissed Venkatesh Iyer off the last ball of the second over, caught by captain Shubman Gill.

This wicket marked Rabada’s 18th during the powerplay (the first six overs) of IPL 2026, surpassing the previous record of 17 wickets held by Mohammad Shami in 2023. Mitchell Johnson (2013) and Trent Boult (2020) are tied for third place with 16 wickets each in a single season during the powerplay.

In Qualifier 1, Rabada claimed two wickets against GT, bringing his total for the season to 26.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), batting first after winning the toss at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, scored 254 runs for the loss of five wickets. Captain Rajat Patidar played a stunning innings of 93 runs off just 33 balls, hitting nine sixes and five fours. Virat Kohli and Krunal Pandya contributed 43 runs each. For the opposition, Rabada and Jason Holder took two wickets each, while Prasidh Krishna added one.

The team that wins Qualifier 1 will secure a place in the final on May 31, while the losing team will face the winner of the Eliminator match in Qualifier 2 on May 29.

Gujarat Titans featured Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (captain), Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar, Nishant Sindhu, Jason Holder, Rashid Khan, Kulwant Khejroliya, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna in this match.

Meanwhile, under the captaincy of Rajat Patidar, Royal Challengers Bangalore included Venkatesh Iyer, Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Jitesh Sharma (wicketkeeper), Tim David, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jacob Duffy, Josh Hazlewood, and Rasikh Salam Dar.
