
Colombo, May 27: Recently, the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese language competition took place in several countries, including Sri Lanka, Vietnam, the Philippines, Rwanda, and Sudan. This event highlighted the Chinese language as a medium of communication and friendship.
On May 24, the finals of the 19th “Chinese Bridge” World Secondary School Chinese Language Proficiency Competition were held in Colombo. This year, the competition in Sri Lanka saw participation from 157 contestants, the highest number since its inception. Daphne Ruwanya Kalanasuriya from Gale Southern Secondary School emerged as the champion, earning her a spot in the competition to be held in China.
In his address, Pradeep Saputhanthri, secretary to the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, expressed his delight at witnessing more Sri Lankan youth actively learning the Chinese language and understanding Chinese culture. He encouraged students to maintain their enthusiasm for learning Chinese and to become ambassadors of friendship between Sri Lanka and China, fostering mutual understanding and beneficial cooperation between the two nations.
Chinese Embassy Counselor Chi Lily also spoke, stating that learning the Chinese language not only equips students with proficiency in a new language but also develops their intercultural communication skills, opening up broader prospects for their future development.
The “Chinese Bridge” competition was also held in Vietnam, the Philippines, Rwanda, and Sudan.
