Kolkata, May 27: The issue of illegal immigrants has intensified in West Bengal’s political landscape. In a recent statement, BJP leader and minister Agnimitra Paul made serious allegations against the former TMC government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He noted that since the notification for establishing centers to repatriate individuals at the border was issued, there has been significant activity in border areas.
In an exclusive interview, Paul stated that the movement has increased since the announcement of these centers, which will facilitate the return of individuals to Bangladesh. He accused the previous government of encouraging these individuals for years. “They are not citizens of our country, yet they have been utilizing India’s grain, electricity, water, logistics, and infrastructure,” he remarked.
Paul alleged that the state government compromised national security for the sake of vote bank politics. He mentioned that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has asserted that such individuals will not be handed over to the police. However, he clarified that their party’s government will identify illegal immigrants and hand them over to the Border Security Force. If necessary, they may be temporarily housed in detention centers.
The BJP leader pointed out that Bangladesh had previously stated it would be willing to take back its citizens if proper documentation is provided. He accused the former government of endangering not just West Bengal but the security of the entire nation, which has a population of 1.4 billion.
Agnimitra Paul further emphasized that individuals from another country were allowed to infiltrate solely for the sake of vote bank and political gain. This has jeopardized both national assets and security. The current government, he assured, is taking a stringent stance on this issue and is committed to making West Bengal a secure state from all fronts.
