Strengthening Military Ties: India and Australia Agree on Enhanced Cooperation

New Delhi, May 9: India and Australia held their 10th Defense Policy Talks on Friday in New Delhi. During this significant defense dialogue, both nations discussed the increasing number of joint military exercises. They also welcomed the complex nature of these exercises. Furthermore, both countries expressed their commitment to deepening maritime cooperation.

The talks emphasized strengthening strategic relations with a shared commitment to regional stability and security. Discussions included next steps to enhance coordination between the armed forces and improve joint operational capabilities.

Both sides talked about increasing collaboration with regional partner countries. They highlighted the importance of advancing shared ambitions established during meetings between the defense ministers of both nations. According to the Ministry of Defense, the talks acknowledged the significant progress in defense cooperation over recent years.

The annual India-Australia Defense Ministers’ Dialogue was initiated in 2025, symbolizing the growing trust and improved strategic coordination between the two countries. Both nations expressed satisfaction with the finalization of key implementation agreements related to defense cooperation and the rapid progress of several new initiatives.

Additionally, they agreed to hold the first-ever India-Australia Joint Staff Talks this year. The meeting also reviewed the decisions made during the 2024 India-Australia Annual Summit. Both sides emphasized strengthening the joint declaration on defense and security cooperation and developing a framework for joint maritime security collaboration.

The meeting included discussions on military training exchange programs, such as the General Bipin Rawat Memorial Young Officers Exchange Program and visits between the Indian Military Academy and the Royal Military College in Duntroon. Both nations acknowledged that such programs play a crucial role in building mutual trust, strengthening people-to-people ties, and sharing regional and global perspectives. The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad.

On the Australian side, the delegation was led by Bernard Philip, First Assistant Secretary of International Policy. The meeting reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to further strengthening the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with special attention to defense industry cooperation. They welcomed efforts to promote integration between their defense industries.

The talks also highlighted significant upcoming events, including the first India-Australia Defense Industry Roundtable Conference in Sydney in 2025, Australia’s inaugural defense trade mission to India, and the strategic roundtable meeting on defense industry during the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi in 2026.
