Supreme Court Collegium Approves Appointment of 19 Judges to Madras High Court

New Delhi, May 20: The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, has approved the appointment of 19 lawyers and judicial officers as judges of the Madras High Court.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Collegium confirmed that it approved the proposal from a meeting held on May 18, which recommended the appointment of six judicial officers as judges of the Madras High Court. The recommended candidates include Dr. P. Murugan, M.D. Sumathi, S. Alli, C. Thirumagal Chandrasekar, Dharmalingam Lingeshwaran, and Karthikeyan Balathandayutham.

Additionally, the Collegium approved another proposal from November 21, 2025, recommending six lawyers: Natarajan Ramesh, G.K. Muthukumar, Ramakrishnan Rajesh Vivekanandan, Shankaranarayanan Ravikumar, Nagarajan Dilip Kumar, and Elappan Manoharan for judgeships at the Madras High Court.

In a separate proposal dated December 7, 2025, the Collegium also approved the names of lawyers Krishnaswamy Govindarajan, Rajneesh Pathiyil, K. Appadurai alias Kandavel Appadurai, and Ramasamy Anita for judgeship at the Madras High Court bench.

Furthermore, on December 10, 2025, the Collegium recommended the appointment of judicial officers Shanmugam Karthikeyan, Baluchami Murugesan, and N. Gunasekaran as judges of the Madras High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium, which is chaired by the Chief Justice of India, consists of the most senior judges of the Supreme Court.

According to the rules regarding the appointment of High Court judges, the Chief Justice of the respective High Court sends a proposal after consulting with the two senior-most judges. This recommendation is then forwarded to the Chief Minister, who sends it to the Governor. The Governor subsequently forwards the proposal, along with necessary documents and information, to the Union Minister of Law and Justice.

The central government processes the proposal and sends it to the Chief Justice of India, who, after consulting with the senior-most judges of the Supreme Court, finalizes the recommendation.

Once the Collegium’s approval is obtained, the recommendation is sent to the central government. The appointments become effective after the President signs the appointment letters and the notification is published in the Gazette by the Department of Justice.
