Chennai, May 20: Tamil Nadu’s Electricity and Law Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar has stated that the state’s power department is struggling under heavy debt and a shortage of staff. The government is now working towards comprehensive reforms to strengthen and make the department profitable again.
The minister mentioned that the first phase of inspections is currently underway to assess the existing situation. He revealed that the power department is burdened with approximately ₹2.5 lakh crore in debt, emphasizing that addressing this issue is a government priority.
He accused the previous DMK government of serious irregularities and mismanagement, noting that several cases have already been referred to the CBI. According to the minister, the policies and corruption of the former government have led to the department’s continuous decline.
CTR Nirmal Kumar stated that under Chief Minister Vijay’s directives, significant changes are being implemented to revitalize the power board. He highlighted that millions rely on electricity services daily, making the department’s restructuring essential.
The minister also raised concerns about the severe staff shortage within the department. He pointed out that the current workforce is even lower than it was 15 years ago. Operating the department effectively without adequate staff is not feasible.
He assured that audits would be conducted at every level, and all necessary decisions would be made in the public interest. The government is committed to modernizing and making the department transparent.
The minister claimed that the government is dedicated to eliminating corruption, nepotism, and irregularities to improve all departments. He reiterated that the government is continuously working to enhance administrative systems as promised before the elections.
