
Sambalpur, May 20: In a significant operation against drug trafficking, Sambalpur police apprehended a notorious criminal and cannabis trafficker. During a routine check, police attempted to stop the suspect, who opened fire, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
In the ensuing encounter, the alleged cannabis trafficker, identified as Bunty Suna, was injured. According to police sources, Suna was illegally transporting cannabis from Sonpur district via a secret forest route. Acting on prior intelligence, police had set up a checkpoint near the Mochibahal forest road.
When officers tried to halt the vehicle, the suspect reportedly fired at the police team. In self-defense, the police returned fire, resulting in Suna being shot in the leg.
After sustaining injuries, he was transported to Vimsar Hospital for treatment. Authorities seized a firearm, cannabis, a vehicle, a driving license, and some cash from the scene.
Police officials revealed that Bunty Suna has over 16 criminal cases registered against him in Balangir and Sambalpur districts.
The incident occurred around 5:40 AM when Suna was transporting illegal cannabis in a car. Upon noticing the police checkpoint, he attempted to flee, leading to a crash. After exiting the vehicle, he allegedly fired at the police, prompting them to respond in kind.
