Uttarakhand Mourns the Passing of Former Chief Minister Major General Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri

Dehradun, May 19: The Uttarakhand government has declared three days of state mourning following the sudden demise of former Chief Minister Major General Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri. An order issued by the General Administration Department states that the national flag will be flown at half-mast across all government offices in honor of the late leader.

According to directives from Additional Secretary Mahavir Singh Chauhan, state mourning will be observed from May 19 to May 21. During this period, no government entertainment programs will be held.

The government also announced that Major General Khanduri’s last rites will take place on May 20 with full police honors. All state government offices will remain closed on the day of the funeral.

This order has been communicated to all principal secretaries, the Director General of Police, divisional commissioners, department heads, and district magistrates to ensure strict compliance with the directives.

Major General Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri was a prominent and respected figure in Uttarakhand’s political landscape. His passing has left a wave of grief in both the political and social spheres of the state.

Before entering politics, Khanduri served as a distinguished officer in the Indian Army’s Corps of Engineers, known for his strict discipline and exceptional administrative skills. He later transitioned into politics, serving as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand twice—first from 2007 to 2009 and again from 2011 to 2012.

He also held significant responsibilities in the central government as the Minister of Road Transport and Highways and was a Member of Parliament representing the Garhwal constituency in the 16th Lok Sabha.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences on the social media platform X, stating that he received the sad news of Major General Khanduri’s passing. He highlighted Khanduri’s exemplary service to the nation, discipline, and dedication during his military career.

The Chief Minister further noted that in his political life, Khanduri established a strong identity for Uttarakhand’s development, good governance, transparency, and integrity. As a people’s leader, he made significant decisions for the state’s progress and earned a special place in the hearts of the people through his simplicity, candor, and efficiency. His demise is an irreplaceable loss, not only for Uttarakhand but for national politics as well.
