New Delhi, May 20: A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sentenced a key accused in a case related to the Pakistan-backed terrorist organizations Taliban and Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.
The NIA’s special court in Bengaluru also imposed a fine of ₹63,000 on Hamraz Varshid Sheikh, a resident of Maharashtra. Sheikh confessed to his crime during the trial that began in April 2026.
According to the NIA, Sheikh was convicted under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The case was registered in April 2023.
In October 2023, the NIA filed a chargesheet against Hamraz Sheikh and his associate Mohammad Arif. The trial against Arif is currently ongoing.
The investigation revealed that Sheikh became radicalized between 2019 and 2022 while living in Saudi Arabia, establishing contacts with individuals in Pakistan and Afghanistan linked to Taliban and TTP ideologies.
It was also discovered that an Instagram account named ‘Kashmir Pages’ was used to inspire individuals towards extremism.
Upon returning to India, Sheikh conspired with his associate Arif to identify vulnerable and misguided youths, aiming to connect them with the terrorist ideologies of Taliban and TTP.
The investigation agency reported that both accused formed a terrorist group intending to join TTP in Afghanistan and wage jihad against India.
Meanwhile, the NIA filed a chargesheet against the 23rd accused in a separate terrorist conspiracy case linked to Babbar Khalsa International and Lawrence Bishnoi Gang. The chargesheet against Arjit Kumar, also known as Ajit, was submitted in the special court at Patiala House in New Delhi, citing various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
According to the NIA’s statement, this case is connected to a conspiracy to spread terrorism in India by the Lawrence Bishnoi Gang and the banned organization BKI. Arjit Kumar is the 23rd accused in this case.
