Kolkata, May 20: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has faced a significant setback in the Falta constituency following a crushing defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. This seat has drawn attention not only from Bengal but from across the nation. With TMC candidate Jahangir Khan refusing to contest, the party’s loss appears certain. This situation is particularly damaging for TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, who had made bold claims about winning this seat and directly challenged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
During the assembly elections, Falta gained prominence when Abhishek Banerjee openly challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He stated that the BJP’s attempts to undermine their “Diamond Harbour model” would take more than ten lifetimes to succeed. Banerjee also issued a direct challenge to Amit Shah, asserting that if he had the courage, he should remain in Kolkata on May 5.
The TMC had pinned its hopes on Jahangir Khan for the Falta seat. He even adopted a cinematic style during his campaign, mimicking the popular film “Pushpa” and delivering lines like “Pushpa Raj… I will not bow down.” However, his sudden decision to withdraw from the race has left his supporters in shock. Voting was scheduled for May 21, but just 48 hours before, he stepped back from the contest.
Earlier, Jahangir Khan had alleged that he might be arrested before the election date. He filed for anticipatory bail in the Calcutta High Court, which was granted by Justice Sougata Bhattacharya. In his plea, he claimed that the police had registered a fabricated FIR against him, putting him at risk of arrest.
The Falta assembly seat falls under the Diamond Harbour parliamentary constituency, which is represented by Abhishek Banerjee. Being the nephew of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, he is considered a significant leader within the party. Since 2014, he has continuously represented this parliamentary seat, winning the 2024 elections by a massive margin of over seven lakh votes. Thus, Falta has been regarded as a stronghold for the TMC.
In response to Jahangir Khan’s decision not to contest, the BJP has mocked the situation. Central Minister Sukanta Majumdar commented to the media in Kolkata that many aspire to be “Pushpa,” but this time, “Pushpa” has turned out to be a flop.
