New Delhi (Udaipur Kiran News): In a major milestone for India’s telecom sector, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Saturday launched its long-awaited 4G network, marking a significant step toward technological self-reliance. The “Swadeshi” 4G service was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also commissioned over 97,500 mobile towers across the country, built at a cost of nearly ₹37,000 crore.

A Turning Point for BSNL
For the state-run telecom giant, the 4G rollout represents a revival moment. After years of lagging behind private players, BSNL has deployed 92,600 indigenous technology-based sites, placing itself at the forefront of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission in telecom.
Founded in 2000, BSNL has long been the connectivity backbone of rural India. However, delays in 4G rollout led to loss of market share and competitiveness. The new Swadeshi 4G network, launched in the company’s silver jubilee year, is being seen as a turning point that could restore BSNL’s position as a key national player.
Connecting the Unconnected
While private operators have traditionally focused on urban and high-revenue markets, BSNL has maintained a strong presence in rural and remote regions. The 4G rollout extends that legacy, providing modern digital connectivity to areas previously underserved or unconnected.
Green Networks, Sustainable Vision
A unique feature of the rollout is the focus on sustainability. Many of the new towers are solar-powered, making it the largest cluster of green telecom sites in India. This approach not only reduces operational costs but also ensures reliable connectivity in regions with unstable power supply.
Digital Bharat Nidhi Boost
The project aligns with the Digital Bharat Nidhi initiative, aimed at achieving 100% 4G saturation. BSNL will cover 29,000 to 30,000 villages under this mission, bridging the digital divide and supporting the government’s vision of a connected Bharat.
A Comeback Story
After years of financial strain and missed opportunities, BSNL now has a chance to redefine its narrative. By leveraging indigenous technology and focusing on rural empowerment, the operator is reaffirming its role as India’s connectivity backbone.
As nearly one lakh towers go live, BSNL’s 4G launch is more than a technological upgrade — it is a symbol of revival, resilience, and renewed national commitment to connect every corner of India.
