Washington, 16 August (Kiran News). West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey has announced the deployment of 300 to 400 National Guard soldiers to Washington D.C., following a request from the Trump administration.

According to the governor’s office, this move demonstrates a commitment to public safety and regional cooperation. The deployment will include not just trained personnel but also the necessary equipment and special training.
Governor’s spokesperson Drew Gallang stated that after receiving orders late Friday night, the National Guard has been preparing rapidly for the deployment of soldiers and equipment.
Earlier this week, President Donald Trump announced that hundreds of National Guard soldiers would be stationed in Washington and that he would temporarily take control of the city’s police department. He described these measures as necessary to address crime and homelessness in the capital.
The White House said Saturday that additional National Guard troops would be sent to Washington to “secure federal assets, provide a safe environment for law enforcement officers, and ensure a visible presence to deter crime.”
However, US Justice Department data shows that violent crime in Washington in 2024 is at its lowest level in 30 years. While D.C. is technically a self-governing federal district, it remains under the jurisdiction of the US Congress.
During Friday’s discussions between D.C. officials and the Trump administration, it was agreed that Mayor Muriel Bowser’s appointed police chief would remain in position. Previously, D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb had filed a lawsuit to prevent federal takeover of the police department.
