Thiruvananthapuram, May 14: Former Defense Minister and senior Congress leader A.K. Antony expressed his full support for the party’s decision to appoint V.D. Satheesan as the 13th Chief Minister of Kerala. He urged the public to give Satheesan some time to establish the new government.
Speaking to reporters, Antony stated, “I completely support the decision made by the Congress leadership. Sonia Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge, and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi have made this choice.”
Reflecting on the Congress party’s return to power in the state after a decade, Antony emphasized, “This is a government led by the Congress-led United Democratic Front.”
Later, while addressing journalists, he reiterated that this decision was made after careful consideration. He advised the public to be patient and allow the new government some time to navigate the challenges ahead.
“My only appeal is to please give Satheesan some reasonable time to overcome these difficult circumstances. Kerala is in a dire situation, and he needs time,” he remarked.
Echoing similar sentiments, Congress MP Hibi Eden expressed happiness that the central leadership has acknowledged the hopes of the people of Kerala. Antony noted, “We are very pleased that the leadership has recognized the aspirations of the people of Kerala, where Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and the Indian National Congress have accepted V.D. Satheesan as Chief Minister.”
Eden highlighted that Satheesan has fought a significant battle as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly for the past five years.
He stated, “His struggle has brought an end to the disastrous rule of the LDF. The movements and issues he raised both inside and outside the Assembly have instilled tremendous confidence among the people of Kerala.”
Eden further added, “This is the sole reason why the people of Kerala have accepted him as Chief Minister. We truly appreciate and commend the decision made by the leadership.”
Meanwhile, V.D. Satheesan, the newly appointed Chief Minister, addressed questions regarding the time taken by the Congress leadership to finalize the decision.
He explained that the process involved extensive discussions and should not be viewed as a delay.
“I cannot say it was a delay. It was a process. In the past, there was not such intense scrutiny by the media and social media. Sometimes, false news would spread. The leadership consulted former PCC presidents, committee members, legislators, and MPs before reaching a decision,” he stated.
