Ranchi, May 14: In a significant operation against the illegal trade of opium and narcotics in Jharkhand’s Khunti district, police have achieved major successes in the last 24 hours. During actions across various police station areas, authorities seized 231 kilograms of poppy straw, nearly two kilograms of opium, and a country-made firearm. Cases have been registered under the NDPS Act and the Arms Act.
Additionally, a wanted criminal involved in opium trafficking was apprehended with a country-made gun. The first operation was conducted by the Murhu police, who discovered 231 kilograms of poppy straw (raw material for opium production) in 13 bags from an abandoned Maruti Eco car near the village of Ghaghra on the Gunaloa-Saridkel road early Thursday morning.
Upon noticing the police patrol, the traffickers took advantage of the darkness and fled, leaving the vehicle behind. An FIR has been filed under the NDPS Act at the Murhu police station, and efforts to locate the absconding traffickers are underway. The operation was led by SDPO Varun Rajak and station in-charge Nial Godwin Kerketta.
The second operation took place at Anigda Chowk on the Khunti-Chaibasa main road. SP Rishabh Garg reported that based on a tip-off, police attempted to stop a motorcyclist. Upon seeing the police, the trafficker tried to escape but was intercepted in Anigda village. However, he managed to flee, leaving behind his motorcycle and bag.
A search of the bag revealed 1.995 kilograms of opium, estimated to be worth around 1 million rupees in the international market. In another action, police arrested Ram Munda, a suspect wanted in previous opium trafficking cases, near Bhandra Chowk.
A country-made firearm was also recovered from the accused. SP received information that Ram Munda, a resident of Aloudi village, was armed and present in the Bhandra area. A team formed under SDPO Varun Rajak successfully apprehended him. A case has been registered against the accused under the Arms Act, and he has been sent to jail.
