
New Delhi, May 14: The central government announced on Thursday that two LPG ships en route to India have successfully crossed the Hormuz Strait and are expected to arrive in India within the next few days.
During its daily briefing, the government revealed that the LPG carrier SYMI, flagged under the Marshall Islands, is transporting 19,965 metric tons of LPG cargo to India. This vessel, with 21 foreign crew members on board, safely navigated the Hormuz Strait on May 13 and is anticipated to reach Kandla on May 16.
Additionally, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways stated that another LPG carrier, NV Sunshine, flagged under Vietnam, is bringing 46,427 metric tons of LPG cargo to India. This ship, carrying 24 foreign crew members, successfully crossed the Hormuz Strait on May 14, with an expected arrival in New Mangalore on May 18.
In a separate incident, an Indian dhow named MSV Haji Ali encountered an accident in the maritime region of Oman while traveling from Somalia to Sharjah, UAE, on the morning of May 13. The vessel caught fire and subsequently sank.
The ministry reported that all 14 crew members aboard were safely rescued by the Omani Coast Guard and have reached Dibba Port in Oman. The crew is unharmed, and necessary formalities with local authorities have been completed.
The government confirmed ongoing communication with the Omani government, Indian mission officials, and relevant maritime agencies. According to the ministry, there have been no other incidents involving Indian ships or foreign vessels with Indian sailors in the past 72 hours, aside from the MSV Haji Ali incident.
The ministry stated, “All Indian sailors present in the region are currently safe.”
Furthermore, the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) control room has handled 9,266 calls and over 20,592 emails since becoming operational. In the last 72 hours alone, 377 calls and 834 emails were received.
The ministry noted that over 3,158 Indian sailors have been safely repatriated from various locations in the Gulf region through DG Shipping, including 62 sailors returned in the last 72 hours.
The government also assured that operations at all Indian ports are normal, with no reports of congestion or disruption.
