Tamil Nadu Minister Clarifies Stance Against Hindutva, Not Hindus

Chennai, May 14: Following a controversial statement by Tamil Nadu’s opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin regarding ‘anti-Sanatana’ sentiments, Minister and leader of the Tamilaga Vetria Katchi (TVK), Aadhav Arjun, asserted on Thursday that his party stands against Hindutva, not Hindus.

Speaking to reporters, Minister Aadhav Arjun emphasized that TVK opposes discrimination based on caste and religion. He stated, “We always regard Hindus, Christians, and Muslims as equals. We respect all beliefs.”

He further mentioned that while he personally does not believe in God, as a minister and legislator, he respects all religions and communities. Arjun remarked, “I must show respect, as must our leader (Chief Minister Vijay). This is the essence of the Indian Constitution. We do not believe in any form of hierarchy.”

The minister clarified, “We are not against Hindus; we are against Hindutva. Hindutva implies imposing one’s religion on others. The term ‘Sanatana’ is often misinterpreted. In North India, it means ‘Hindu,’ but in Tamil Nadu, ‘Sanatana Dharma’ signifies inequality. This is where the controversy arises.”

Minister Arjun urged the opposition leader to clarify his statement. He reiterated, “We are against inequality, but not against any religion.”

Regarding the actions of the new TVK-led government, Minister Arjun stated, “People want results on the ground. Therefore, our Chief Minister has instructed every legislator to initiate review meetings with senior officials, particularly in the departments of corporation, police, water management, drainage, and school education.”

He referenced Chief Minister Vijay’s order to close over 700 TASMAC liquor shops, highlighting that women’s safety is a significant concern.

To combat drug sales in the state, Arjun mentioned a ‘positive dialogue’ with the police department. He stated, “The police will take action regarding both drugs and women’s safety. I have also requested that every police station be brought under CCTV surveillance. We are ready to provide IT support to the police department.”

He added, “This is not an order. The system must function effectively. We are prepared to assist. We will follow our leader (Chief Minister Vijay), who stated that they will not touch a single penny of the people’s money. You can report back on our performance in three months.”
