
Ahmedabad, June 4: The First World Yoga Asana Championship is taking place in Ahmedabad from June 4 to June 8. This unique championship marks the first of its kind globally. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the event via a virtual platform on Thursday. He emphasized that this championship will help recognize yoga as a competitive sport.
During his address, Prime Minister Modi stated, “Every tradition evolves over time. This World Yoga Asana Championship marks the beginning of a new phase. Through this championship, yoga asana will gain recognition as a competitive sport. I am confident that in the future, yoga asana will find its place in international sports competitions.”
He added, “A new chapter is being added to the world’s sports heritage from the land of Ahmedabad. The first World Yoga Asana Championship is starting now. I welcome all participants who have come to India for this championship and wish them the best. Ahmedabad is a UNESCO World Heritage City, and hosting this event in such a historic city is a matter of pride. International Yoga Day will be celebrated on June 21, with various yoga-related programs around the world. This year, the main event will take place in another historic city of India, Kolkata. The World Yoga Asana Championship serves as a double dose of health and wellness leading up to International Yoga Day.”
More than 60 countries are participating in the inaugural World Yoga Asana Championship. Addressing the participants, Prime Minister Modi said, “The Ministry of AYUSH has launched Yoga 365. I urge all athletes participating in this championship to take the message of yoga back to your countries. You can all become ambassadors of ‘Yoga 365’ in your nations. Your experiences and beliefs can connect the world with this message. Regardless of who wins this competition, you are all champions for participating. Your talent and discipline will inspire youth across the globe. With these good wishes, I congratulate all participants and organizers.”
