UN Peacekeeper Killed in Mortar Attack in Southern Lebanon

Beirut, June 4: The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Southern Lebanon, UNIFIL, has confirmed that one peacekeeper was killed in a mortar attack, while two others were injured.

The attack occurred early in the morning near the Marjayoun area, when mortar shells struck a peacekeeping base. The severely injured soldier later succumbed to his injuries.

According to a statement from UNIFIL, the nationality of the deceased peacekeeper and the identity of the party responsible for the attack have not yet been disclosed. The organization stated that an investigation into the incident is underway. The two injured peacekeepers have been hospitalized, but further details regarding their condition have not been released.

The security situation in Southern Lebanon has long been tense, with periodic clashes and attacks occurring near the Israel-Lebanon border. A significant meeting mediated by the United States took place on Wednesday, resulting in an agreement on a ceasefire.

The Times of Israel highlighted that Hezbollah must withdraw from south of the Litani River. Both governments have decided to reconvene for direct talks on June 22, asserting their right to determine Lebanon’s future as a sovereign nation while rejecting interference from Iran or other groups.

Despite the agreement, attacks continued on Thursday. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated, “Military operations against Lebanon will continue despite the ceasefire.”

Lebanon’s state news agency NNA reported that an attack in the Bekaa region’s Sohmor city resulted in one death and four injuries. Additional attacks occurred in the towns of Haddatha, Tibnin, Haris, Kafr, and Harin in Southern Lebanon.
