New Delhi, June 4: In line with the directives of Delhi’s Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, the Food Safety Department has ramped up its enforcement and monitoring activities across the capital over the past month. The initiative aims to ensure that consumers have access to safe and high-quality food products.
As part of the regular food safety monitoring process, the Food Safety Department collected a total of 217 food samples from various food business establishments in Delhi during this period. The department received 145 food analysis reports, of which 133 samples met the prescribed food safety standards. However, 12 samples were found non-compliant, prompting the department to initiate necessary actions against the respective food business operators under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
In a significant enforcement action, department officials, in collaboration with the Delhi Police, uncovered a substandard spice manufacturing unit in Khari Baoli market. Legal action has been initiated against the food business operator under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. To enhance regulatory enforcement, the department is strengthening its legal framework through timely prosecutions and active advocacy in courts for food safety violations.
To facilitate compliance and promote ease of doing business, the department has processed a substantial number of applications for licenses and registrations. In May, a total of 503 licenses were issued, and actions were taken on 753 applications related to license renewals and modifications.
Additionally, 4,010 registrations were granted, and 1,000 registration applications (related to renewals and modifications) were also processed. These efforts have significantly bolstered regulatory oversight and encouraged greater compliance among food business operators throughout Delhi.
The Food Safety Department continues to strengthen its regulatory framework through scientific sampling, targeted inspections, legal enforcement, and active dialogue with stakeholders.
