Shimla, June 4: Himachal Pradesh Minister Jagat Singh Negi launched a strong attack on the opposition during a press conference. He stated that the recently concluded Panchayati Raj elections in the state were conducted in a completely peaceful and democratic manner, with results now declared. Following the elections, all elected representatives should commence their duties. However, the opposition continues to mislead the public regarding the election results.
Negi emphasized that these elections were not held under any party symbol but were conducted openly. Therefore, portraying them as a political contest or a final showdown is misleading. Elections at the panchayat, panchayat samiti, and district council levels vary in nature. In many areas, personal popularity and local dynamics play a significant role. Thus, they should not be viewed as victories or defeats for any single political party. The municipal elections have taken place, but many elections in various bodies are still pending. It is inappropriate to draw broad political conclusions based on these limited results.
He accused the opposition of exaggerating these limited outcomes to present them as a political advantage, which does not reflect the reality. The functioning at the panchayat level is entirely based on a collective decision-making process. A panchayat head cannot make decisions alone; development works proceed with the consensus of ward members and other representatives. Similarly, decisions in panchayat samitis and district councils are made based on majority consensus. This system does not rely on any single individual or ideology but operates through collective cooperation.
The minister also alleged that such political discourse is being amplified to divert attention from the real issues facing the public. Today, the common people are struggling with inflation, rising cooking gas prices, unemployment, and other economic challenges. Instead of addressing these issues, the opposition is focusing solely on election results. Due to the central government’s policies, many welfare schemes have been affected, impacting development works in rural areas.
He cited the example of the MGNREGA scheme, which previously guaranteed employment in rural areas. However, several changes have been made, resulting in insufficient work opportunities for people. He accused the government of budget and funding cuts, which are hindering development projects at the panchayat level. While everyone has the right to express their views in a democracy, it should be done responsibly.
