Mumbai, June 4: Indian T20 cricket team captain Surya Kumar Yadav is currently facing a challenging phase. However, his childhood coach, Ashok Asawalkar, believes that Surya knows how to navigate through tough times and that scoring big is crucial for him.
Ashok Asawalkar stated, “When a player goes through a rough patch, it becomes difficult to overcome it. Surya is experiencing this phase, but he is such a great player that he understands how to come out of it. He will recover on his own. Criticism can be somewhat distracting, but he needs to learn from it and focus on his game to score big, which is very important for him.”
Under Surya’s leadership, India won the Asia Cup in 2025 and followed it up with a victory in the T20 World Cup 2026. However, during this period, Surya has struggled with his form.
In the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), Surya Kumar Yadav managed to score only 270 runs at an average of 20.76 across 13 matches, including two half-centuries. His team, the Mumbai Indians (MI), could only secure four wins out of 14 matches, finishing ninth in the points table.
Surya was appointed captain of the Indian cricket team in July 2024, taking over from Rohit Sharma. At that time, he was the number one batsman in T20 international cricket, surpassing Hardik Pandya in the captaincy race.
According to media reports, despite leading India to a T20 World Cup victory, it may be time to consider a new captain in light of Surya’s form and future prospects. Reports suggest that Shreyas Iyer is currently the frontrunner to become the new T20 captain. It is anticipated that the Indian team may debut a new captain in the upcoming T20 series against Ireland.
Surya Kumar Yadav has scored 3,272 runs in 113 T20 matches for India, averaging 36.35, with four centuries and 25 half-centuries to his name. Additionally, he has played 37 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and one Test match for India.
