Bangladesh: Awami League Leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Sent to Jail in Murder Case

Dhaka, June 4: A court in Bangladesh has sent former Member of Parliament and Awami League leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to jail in connection with a murder case. This case is linked to a shooting incident that occurred during protests in the Uttara area of Dhaka in July 2024.

Sub-inspector Mohammad Shamim from the prosecution department reported that Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hussain issued the order on Wednesday based on a request from the investigating officer.

According to a report from The Dhaka Tribune, Rahman was arrested late Tuesday night from his residence in Sector-11 under the Uttara West police station. Following his arrest, investigating officer Shaheen Mahmood presented him in court and requested custody for questioning.

Records indicate that during the protests on July 19, 2024, a person named Asadullah was shot in Sector-7 of Uttara. After the incident, his wife filed a general diary (GD) at the Turag police station. On August 11, 2024, the family identified him at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, leading to a murder case being filed.

Last month, the Awami League expressed serious concerns regarding the credibility of cases related to the July 2024 protests. The party claims that many of these cases are “false and fabricated.”

The party argues that cases expected to ensure justice and accountability have been misused for personal vendettas, financial gain, and to implicate political or personal adversaries.

Citing information related to the investigation, the Awami League stated that a significant number of allegations reviewed so far lack solid evidence for substantiation. Consequently, investigators have recommended dropping charges against several accused individuals.

The party raised serious questions about how many cases linked to such significant historical events are genuinely valid and how many were filed for political or personal motives.

According to data from the PBI headquarters, as of April 22 of this year, the agency was tasked with investigating 195 cases related to the July 2024 protests.

The Awami League noted, “The investigation found no evidence in 24 cases. Additionally, 20 cases were withdrawn by complainants, most of whom reportedly claimed they were false. Seven cases were retracted due to duplicate filings for the same incident, while in one case, the complainant did not appear in court. Overall, the PBI has submitted investigation reports on 52 cases that could not be substantiated or were deemed invalid for other reasons.”
