Kolkata, June 4: An FIR has been lodged against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for making inflammatory remarks regarding the Home Ministry.
On Thursday, police reported that the case was registered at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station based on a complaint from a lawyer.
The complaint pertains to comments made by Banerjee during a protest gathering on June 2 on Rani Rashmoni Road in Kolkata. In her speech, she referenced the murder of Bangladeshi national Osman Hadi and made statements implicating the central Home Ministry and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Lawyer Rinki Sen Chatterjee filed the complaint, alleging that Hadi’s murder occurred last December in Bangladesh. The assailants crossed into West Bengal from Meghalaya in January, where they were apprehended by the state’s Special Task Force (STF).
During her address on June 2, Banerjee raised this issue, suggesting that despite the murder taking place in another country, she knows who was involved and accused the Home Ministry of complicity.
Sen stated that as Chief Minister, Banerjee could have directly addressed this matter with the Home Ministry. However, now she claims that a murder in Bangladesh was a planned act ordered by the Home Ministry. Such allegations, according to Sen, are inciting tensions between India and Bangladesh and tarnishing the country’s global image. Her remarks have also jeopardized the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh.
Sen further emphasized that Banerjee had taken an oath to maintain national confidentiality while in office, yet after stepping down, she has provoked extremist elements.
In her speech on June 2, Banerjee mentioned that the STF arrested an accused from Bangladesh, which sparked significant protests there. She remarked, “I am not discussing other countries, but the issue is that such individuals enter Bengal via Meghalaya. Once they arrive, the STF apprehends them. The Home Minister himself has stated this. I have refrained from saying this for a long time, but today I am speaking out.”
