
Washington, May 14: China’s boarding school system in Tibet is viewed as a deliberate effort towards cultural erasure and ideological control. A recent report highlights the imposition of the Mandarin language, the promotion of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) ideology, and the separation of children from their families. This strategy aims to create a generation of Tibetans who may no longer think, speak, or identify as Tibetan.
Writing for the ‘Journal of Democracy’, Khedrub Thondup, the nephew of the Dalai Lama, stated that the CCP is waging a war not only against the region and religion but also against memory itself, with classrooms serving as the main battleground. He emphasized that the tools being used include language policies, boarding schools, and ideological education, targeting children as “the most vulnerable carriers of culture.”
Thondup noted, “The CCP has placed over one million Tibetan children in government boarding schools on the plateau. They have been separated from their families, stripped of their language, and are being educated solely in Mandarin. They are taught to glorify Mao Zedong, sing songs for the People’s Liberation Army, and regard the CCP as the benevolent architect of their future. What is happening is not education; it is oppression.”
He further stated, “This campaign is deliberate, planned, and destructive. Its goal is to sever Tibetans from their heritage, erase the dissemination of Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan identity, and create a generation that thinks, speaks, and dreams in Mandarin, loyal to Beijing rather than Lhasa.”
The report indicates that the boarding school system is a cornerstone of Beijing’s strategy. It also mentions that even four-year-old children are taken from their homes and enrolled in institutions where Tibetan language and culture are marginalized. If Tibetan is taught, it is as a “secondary” subject, while Mandarin is the primary medium of instruction.
It states, “Separation from family is not incidental; it is essential. By distancing children from the daily rhythms of Tibetan life, Beijing weakens community bonds and disrupts the spread of culture. Parents report that their children return home unable to speak Tibetan fluently, ashamed of their traditions, and disconnected from Buddhist practices.”
The report suggests that this move represents a long-term strategy aimed not at quieting Tibet today but at ensuring its security in the future. By erasing Tibetan identity from the educational sphere, Beijing seeks to eliminate any possibility of resistance in the years to come.
The report concludes, “The human cost of this campaign is immense. The separation inflicts psychological trauma on children. Reports describe beatings for wearing Buddhist prayer beads, punishments for praying, and humiliations for speaking Tibetan. Families are fracturing. Communities are weakening. Future generations risk growing up without fluency in the Tibetan language or ties to Buddhist traditions. The result is not only cultural loss but also spiritual destruction.”
