Ranchi, May 15: The Jharkhand High Court has expressed strong discontent with the Bokaro police regarding the case of a 14-year-old girl who has been missing since 2020. During a hearing on Friday, Justices Sujit Narayan Prasad and Sanjay Prasad raised pointed questions about the police’s lackluster approach to such sensitive cases. They questioned why the Bokaro police consistently fail to make progress when girls or young women go missing.
The court scrutinized the actions of both the current and former Superintendents of Police, as well as the relevant Deputy Superintendent. It noted that the authorities seem indifferent to resolving these critical cases. The judges expressed surprise that the police themselves acknowledged the possibility of abduction, yet no substantial investigation was pursued in that direction.
During the proceedings, the court deemed the investigation thus far as unsatisfactory and directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to submit a progress report within three weeks. The bench warned that if the CID’s investigation does not show improvement, it may consider handing the case over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a joint inquiry.
The court highlighted that after the First Information Report (FIR) was filed in 2020, the police had mentioned conducting narco tests on three suspects, but one was released due to health issues. According to the court, after years of failing to find any leads on the missing girl, the police hastily transferred the case to the CID in April 2026 to cover up their shortcomings.
The next hearing in this case is scheduled for June 8, coinciding with another petition regarding the disappearance of an 18-year-old girl from Bokaro. The advocate for the petitioner, Vincent Rohit Marki, informed the court that despite five years passing, there has been no trace of the minor. Although four suspects were initially apprehended in the case registered at the Pindrajora police station in 2020, they were later released. Frustrated, the mother of the missing girl has approached the High Court for assistance, prompting the court to adopt a stern stance on the matter.
