New Delhi, May 15: India’s exports in April experienced a significant increase of 13.6% year-on-year, surpassing $80.8 billion. This figure includes $43.56 billion from goods and $37.2 billion from services.
In April of the previous year, goods exports were $38.28 billion, while services exports stood at $32.8 billion.
This growth in exports comes at a time when the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran has led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, impacting exports to several countries in the Middle East.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal noted that despite regional challenges, the strength of exports remains robust, attributing this to India’s ability to diversify into new geographical areas and product markets.
Imports into India also saw an uptick, with total imports reaching $88.6 billion in April, compared to $82.3 billion during the same period last year.
Goods imports rose to $71.9 billion, up from $65.4 billion in April 2025, while services imports decreased slightly to $16.66 billion from $16.9 billion. This increase in imports indicates sustained demand within the country’s economy.
Consequently, India’s merchandise trade deficit widened to $28.4 billion, compared to $27.1 billion in the same month last year. However, the services surplus increased to $20.54 billion in April, up from $15.9 billion during the same period last year.
The United States remains the largest export destination for India, while China continues to be the biggest source of imports.
According to government data, India established 1,821 new product-country export combinations in the fiscal year 2026, reflecting a comprehensive diversification strategy.
Additionally, India’s gold imports surged to $5.63 billion in April 2026, compared to $3.1 billion in April 2025.
