Indian Oil and DMRC Launch Hydrogen Buses to Promote Clean Public Transport

New Delhi, May 15: Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have launched hydrogen buses aimed at enhancing clean and sustainable mobility in India. This announcement was made by Arvind Kumar, Director of Refineries at Indian Oil, on Friday.

In a conversation with news agencies, Kumar revealed that two new hydrogen fuel cell buses will operate between the Central Secretariat and the Krishi Bhawan, promoting green and environmentally friendly public transport.

Kumar stated, “Hydrogen-powered buses represent a remarkable initiative for green and clean transportation. The hydrogen used in these buses is produced at our research and development center located in Faridabad.”

He further explained that these buses emit only water, making them completely pollution-free. “Hydrogen is utilized in the fuel cell, and the only waste produced is water. This makes it an eco-friendly and pollution-free system,” he added.

Currently, this initiative includes only two buses, but IOCL is expanding its green hydrogen capabilities. Kumar mentioned, “We are also developing a green hydrogen plant with a capacity of 10 KTA at the Panipat refinery. Construction is underway, and while it will take some time to become operational, as technology and economic aspects mature, we will advance this into the transportation sector.”

Referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for adopting clean and fuel-efficient technologies, Kumar emphasized the need to actively promote advanced low-carbon technologies like green hydrogen.

He concluded, “The hydrogen-powered buses represent a commendable initiative by Indian Oil to DMRC, and gradually, more such initiatives will emerge.” According to Kumar, IOCL currently has 15 hydrogen-powered buses under various pilot projects across the country.

While this initiative is still in the experimental phase, Indian Oil is continuously expanding its green hydrogen mobility ecosystem.
