Armed Robbery in East Delhi Unraveled: Five Arrested, Gold Chains and Cash Recovered

New Delhi, May 15: The East Delhi Police has achieved a significant breakthrough in an armed robbery case involving a gold trader. In a joint operation by the Special Staff of East District and the Preet Vihar police, five suspects, including two main robbers, have been apprehended.

During the operation, police recovered 21 stolen gold chains and ₹2.31 lakh in cash, amounting to nearly 90 percent of the total stolen goods.

According to a press release issued by the police on Friday, the incident occurred on the night of May 3 at around 10:30 PM. Sukumar Dhara, a jeweler who has been operating in Mandawali for the past 22 years, was returning home after closing his shop when two armed assailants stopped him. They stole his scooter, 23 gold chains, other jewelry, ₹3 lakh in cash, and his mobile phone. An FIR was promptly registered at the Preet Vihar police station, and an investigation began immediately.

Given the seriousness of the case, joint teams from the Special Staff and local police were formed. Over the course of ten days, the police reviewed footage from more than 600 CCTV cameras. The suspects changed clothes frequently, used different vehicles, and even discarded the stolen mobile phone from a moving truck to mislead the investigation.

Through technical analysis, local intelligence, and continuous surveillance, the police traced the movements of the suspects. It was revealed that they traveled through Vikas Marg, Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, Signature Bridge, Bhajanpura, and Ghonda, eventually reaching Jafrabad in Northeast Delhi. The police conducted raids at various locations and arrested all suspects.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Vijay Kumar (30), Sunil (35), Arjun (26), Anand (21), and Harish (42). Vijay Kumar and Sunil are the main robbers, while the other three were involved in reconnaissance and providing information. Vijay Kumar has 19 prior criminal cases registered against him.

The police also recovered a bag containing the stolen jewelry, fluorescent jackets, clothing worn during the crime, helmets, and a backpack from the suspects. According to the police, this operation showcases the technical proficiency and professional investigative capability of the East District Police. Further investigations are ongoing.
