Union Minister Criticizes Mamata Banerjees Stubbornness Amid Election Results

New Delhi, May 6: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan criticized Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday for her refusal to voluntarily resign as Chief Minister. He described her stance as “stubbornness.”

Pradhan stated that the Trinamool Congress’s resistance to accountability and refusal to accept the people’s mandate exemplifies how democracy in Bengal is being held at gunpoint.

In a post on social media platform X, he remarked, “Democracy in Bengal is being held at gunpoint, and the refusal to accept electoral results highlights this reality. The mandate is being treated as mere suggestions that can be dismissed. Mamata Banerjee’s denial of the spirit of the mandate raises serious questions.”

The minister expressed that the people of Bengal expected humility after the mandate. Instead, they are witnessing attempts by the Trinamool Congress to evade accountability. He emphasized that in the race to cling to power, Banerjee is not only rejecting the people’s mandate but also undermining the credibility of institutions like the Election Commission and security forces, which are essential for ensuring free, fair, and secure elections.

According to Pradhan, Bengal has long been under a governance model characterized by threats, syndicate networks, and deep political patronage.

Referring to Banerjee, he stated, “Her opposition is no exception. It is the clearest affirmation of the same system. A true democrat bows to the people, while a dictator clings to power without regard for them.”

He added that the mandate from Bengal is a rejection of fear, coercion, and a demand for accountability.

Pradhan concluded, “Ignoring this undermines the very foundation of democratic legitimacy. The Constitution of India does not regard stubbornness in governance as a virtue. Accountability is essential, and there can be no compromise on the mandate.”

This criticism comes at a time when the BJP is poised to form the next government in West Bengal with a decisive two-thirds majority, marking the end of the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state.

The majority mark in the 294-member assembly is 148. Results for 293 constituencies were announced on Monday, while a re-election for the Falta seat in South 24 Parganas is scheduled for May 21.

In the declared results, the BJP secured 206 seats, significantly ahead of the Trinamool Congress, which managed only 81 seats. Mamata Banerjee lost the Bhawanipur seat to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes.
