New Delhi, May 15: Mangalesh Dabral, a prominent figure in modern Hindi poetry, was a poet, prose writer, and senior journalist whose works resonate deeply with readers. His poetry transports them to a world that feels intimately familiar. With a simple, gentle, and humble personality, Dabral intricately wove human emotions into his verses.
Born on May 16, 1948, in Kafalpani village of Tehri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand, he later moved to Delhi, where he contributed to various publications, including Pratipaksh.
Dabral is recognized as one of the significant poets in contemporary Hindi literature, known for introducing new experiences and emotions into poetry. His works beautifully depict the emotional aspects of humanity, infused with a local essence. His published poetry collections include “Pahad Par Laalten,” “Ghar Ka Rasta,” “Hum Jo Dekhte Hain,” and “Awaaz Bhi Ek Jagah Hai.” He also edited a collection of poems by Rajasthani teacher poets titled “Ret Ghadi.”
In addition to his original works, Dabral translated notable international poets like Pablo Neruda and Ernesto Cardenal. He also co-translated Hermann Hesse’s novel “Siddhartha” and a collection by Bengali writer Navarun Bhattacharya.
In an interview, Dabral shared that after writing a poem, the creator’s experience dies, and the life of the creation begins. He validated Raghuvira Sahai’s statement, “Poetry is not dead until it is written.” He discussed the relationship between journalism and poetry, stating that journalism provides noise, while poetry attempts to transform that noise into music. Balancing both fields has been challenging, but journalism has enriched his poetry.
Dabral regarded Nagarjun as an ideal and paid tribute to those who have fallen along the way yet continue to strive. His poetry speaks against hypocrisy, deceit, and social injustice. A man of few words and firm beliefs, Mangalesh Dabral carried forward the tradition in Hindi literature that expresses the truth of society and humanity quietly.
