New Delhi, May 15: Significant changes are on the horizon for education in West Bengal. The state will implement programs aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 in its schools. Additionally, the PM-Shrie scheme will be introduced to modernize school facilities. This initiative comes as a result of a collaborative effort between the central education ministry and the state government.
Following a change in government, West Bengal is now taking decisive steps to reform its education system. Previously, the state had distanced itself from several central government initiatives. However, it is now embracing the National Education Policy 2020 and the PM-Shrie school scheme.
On Friday, a crucial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the central and West Bengal governments in New Delhi. This agreement marks the beginning of a new era in educational reform within the state. According to the central education ministry, the MoU formalizes the implementation of the PM-Shrie school initiative.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Education. On behalf of the West Bengal government, Additional Secretary Dheeraj Sahu and Additional Chief Secretary Binod Kumar signed the agreement. This development is considered significant, especially since the previous Mamata Banerjee government had avoided implementing many provisions of the National Education Policy 2020 and the PM-Shrie scheme.
For a long time, there was a standoff between the central and state governments on this issue. However, the new administration has begun to prioritize educational reforms in collaboration with the central government. The PM-Shrie scheme is based on the principles of the National Education Policy 2020. Under this scheme, select government schools in the state will be developed into modern model schools.
These schools will feature smart classrooms, digital education, modern laboratories, libraries, sports facilities, and skill development programs. There will also be a strong emphasis on the holistic development of students, fostering creative thinking, and experiential learning.
The objective of the scheme is not only to strengthen the infrastructure of schools but also to transform them into centers of excellence. This will inspire nearby schools to improve their educational quality. The new education policy will promote early education in the mother tongue, technology-based learning, practical knowledge, and skill-based education.
Experts believe that this decision is a significant step towards integrating West Bengal’s education system with a new national framework. It will provide millions of students in the state with access to modern and quality education. Notable attendees at the signing included Vibhav Goyal, State Project Director of West Bengal, Joint Secretary Dr. Amarpreet Duggal, and Director UP Singh.
