Somali Forces Eliminate 50 Al-Shabaab Fighters in Military Operation

Mogadishu, May 15: The Somali National Army (SNA) announced on Friday that a joint military operation conducted in the outskirts of Baidoa, located in the Southwest State, resulted in the deaths of 50 Al-Shabaab fighters, with several others injured.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the operation, which took place on Thursday, also destroyed multiple technical fighting vehicles used by the militants, along with their weapons caches and other equipment.

The Xinhua news agency reported that the ministry accused armed militias loyal to former Southwest State leader Abdi Aziz Hassan Mohamed of directly collaborating with Al-Shabaab. However, Mohamed has denied these allegations.

In a statement, the ministry emphasized that the government will not allow any individual or group to undermine national security by using arms or militias for political purposes. Legal action will be taken against anyone who aids terrorists or provides them shelter.

Last month, the Somali army, with the assistance of international partners, killed 22 Al-Shabaab terrorists, including a commander, during an operation in the southern part of the country.

On April 29, the ministry reported that this operation was executed through ground actions and airstrikes in the Buulo Cadala area of the Lower Shabelle region. Among the deceased was Commander Kabdiraxman Jiri, notorious for instilling fear among local populations.

The ministry expressed gratitude to its international partners for their ongoing support in efforts to bring peace and stability to the region. It also stated that operations aimed at eliminating Al-Shabaab terrorists will continue to be intensified as part of a broader strategy to maintain stability in the country.

Al-Shabaab was expelled from the capital Mogadishu in 2011, but its fighters remain hidden in rural areas, continuing to carry out ambush attacks and planting explosives.
