Chennai, May 5: A significant shift has occurred in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. C. Joseph Vijay’s party, TVK, has emerged as a major force in the 2026 assembly elections, breaking the long-standing dominance of Dravidian parties. This newcomer has made a remarkable impact, showcasing its strong presence in state politics.
Despite this impressive performance, TVK falls short of the majority needed to form a government. The 234-member assembly requires 118 seats for a clear majority, but TVK currently leads in 108 seats. This means the party is still 10 seats away from achieving a majority.
Complicating matters further, Vijay has won in two constituencies (Perambur and Tiruchi East). According to regulations, he must vacate one seat, which will reduce the party’s count by one. Additionally, one legislator will be appointed as the Speaker, who typically does not vote, further diminishing the effective strength of the party in the assembly.
Given these dynamics, TVK will need the support of at least 12 additional legislators to prove its majority in the assembly. Consequently, smaller parties and alliances have now taken on the role of ‘kingmakers.’
The election results indicate a fragmented mandate for the DMK alliance. The Congress party has secured 6 seats, while left parties CPI and CPI(M) have won 2 seats each. Other parties, including the Indian Union Muslim League and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, have also gained representation.
Meanwhile, the AIADMK alliance has managed to win a limited number of seats. Parties like PMK and BJP within this coalition have achieved some victories. If TVK can garner support from any of these parties, it could easily cross the majority threshold.
In the meantime, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar may soon initiate the government formation process. He could invite Vijay to present his claim to form a government and demonstrate majority support, or request a letter of support. Should TVK fail to prove its majority, the Governor may offer the opportunity to the second-largest party, DMK. If no party succeeds in forming a government, President’s Rule may be imposed, leading to fresh elections within six months.
