Kolkata, June 3: The Kolkata High Court has directed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to submit a report within seven days regarding alleged illegal construction at the residence of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee and his company, Leaps and Bounds. Justice Smita Das Day issued this directive during a hearing on Wednesday.
The court specified that the KMC must detail the types of irregularities or illegal constructions found at Banerjee’s residence, the specific areas affected, and their extent in relation to the total built-up area.
The court has set a seven-day deadline for the report submission. Additionally, property owners have been instructed to present their side, indicating whether any illegal construction exists within two weeks, and if so, to define its scope.
Following the High Court’s order, discussions have intensified in political and administrative circles regarding the case. The next hearing is scheduled for four weeks later, where further actions will be considered based on the KMC’s report and the responses from property owners.
Notably, Abhishek Banerjee’s parents, Amit and Lata Banerjee, have filed a petition in the High Court asserting that the construction of their residence at 29-C, Harish Chatterjee Street, is entirely legal. They have sought the annulment of a notice issued by the KMC, claiming it pertains to illegal construction on a legally built property.
Recently, the KMC has sent several notices to addresses associated with Abhishek Banerjee and his company. About a week ago, Leaps and Bounds requested an additional ten days from the corporation, stating in a letter that they are prepared to provide all required information but need extra time to do so.
It is significant that the KMC has recently issued multiple notices concerning properties registered under the names of Abhishek Banerjee and his company located on Kalighat Road and Harish Mukherjee Road. According to KMC sources, the notices, issued under Section 401 of the KMC Act, requested details of approved building plans, construction documents, and permissions for additional construction.
Allegations are being investigated regarding whether construction has deviated from approved building plans. Initial reports mentioned two properties, but subsequent media reports indicated that notices have been issued for a total of 17 properties, some of which are reportedly registered under the names of Abhishek Banerjee’s relatives.
