Washington, June 3: Iran has firmly dismissed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s assertion that Iranian agents plotted to assassinate American politicians, including the President. The Iranian government labeled the accusations as absurd and baseless, describing them as an attempt to distract from war crimes. Rubio made his comments during a session of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ismail Baghaei, shared a video of Rubio’s statement on social media platform X, stating, “Every accusation is a confession.” He further remarked that attempts to portray Iran as a victim cannot conceal the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against it.
Rubio claimed that certain individuals have been charged in connection with these alleged plots, which reportedly involve Iranian agents planning to assassinate political leaders on U.S. soil. In response, Iran rejected these claims as politically motivated, asserting that the U.S. resorts to such allegations to improve its image on the international stage. The Iranian side also accused the U.S. of targeting civilians during military operations in the region.
Iran referenced recent events, including a missile attack on a school in Minab on February 28, which resulted in the deaths of over 170 children and teachers. They cited this incident as an example of human rights violations.
The rhetoric comes at a time when both sides are accusing each other of violating ceasefire agreements. On Wednesday, an attack at Kuwait’s airport resulted in one death. The IRGC stated that it retaliated against U.S. installations or those aiding them, alleging that U.S. forces had conducted an airstrike on one of its communication towers located in the southern part of Qeshm Island.
The organization claimed that in response, its aerospace forces launched missile and drone attacks on U.S. air and helicopter bases in a neighboring country, as well as the headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Fleet. However, Iran did not specify which country was involved.
