Paris, June 3: Polish tennis star Maja Chwalinska has continued her impressive performance at the French Open. On Wednesday, she defeated the 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya 7-6(3), 6-3 at Court Philippe-Chatrier, securing her spot in her first Grand Slam semifinal.
The 24-year-old Chwalinska will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between world number one Aryna Sabalenka and 25th seed Diana Schneider on Thursday, aiming for her first final appearance.
In a match filled with intense rallies and crucial momentum shifts, Chwalinska displayed remarkable composure at key moments, solidifying her place in the final four.
The Polish player capitalized on her return opportunities, converting seven out of eight break points, while Kalinskaya managed to convert only five out of eleven chances. Kalinskaya struggled with her serve, hitting just two aces and committing six double faults, which kept Chwalinska within striking distance throughout the match.
After losing the first game, Chwalinska quickly gained momentum, taking a 5-1 lead with consecutive breaks. However, Kalinskaya fought back, winning four games in a row. The set ultimately went to a tiebreak, which Chwalinska won comfortably.
Following a tightly contested first set, Chwalinska dominated the second set, winning it 6-3 and securing her advancement to the next round.
The match was fiercely competitive from start to finish, with Chwalinska winning a total of 82 points compared to Kalinskaya’s 69, including 43 receiving points.
This victory marks Chwalinska’s eighth win at Roland Garros this year. She has etched her name in history as only the second qualifier to reach the women’s singles semifinals at Roland Garros in the Open Era, following Nadia Podoroska’s achievement in 2020. No qualifier has ever reached the French Open final in the Open Era, but Chwalinska has a chance to change that.
