UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Coopers Visit to India: Key Discussions on Trade and Security

New Delhi, June 3: UK Foreign Secretary, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Minister Yvette Cooper will arrive in New Delhi on Wednesday for a two-day visit. During her trip, she will engage in bilateral talks with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions will cover trade, investment, security, defense cooperation, and other significant issues between India and the UK. Both nations will also explore measures to strengthen their economic ties and discuss a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized during a regular press briefing in New Delhi that the cooperation between India and the UK extends beyond just the FTA. The partnership encompasses various sectors, including economic, defense, and security. He stated that both sides are working collaboratively to elevate trade and investment relations to new heights.

Previously, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with UK Trade and Commerce Minister Peter Kyle, describing the discussions as highly productive. Goyal characterized the talks as positive and crucial for future prospects.

The economic relationship between India and the UK has gained momentum since the signing of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) in July 2025, which is considered a significant step for trade and investment collaboration.

Recently, India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and his British counterpart Jonathan Powell held the annual India-UK Strategic Dialogue in New Delhi on April 23, 2026.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated on X that both countries discussed enhancing defense and security cooperation and addressed regional and global security challenges during this dialogue. Powell also met with Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss regional and global issues while emphasizing the importance of increasing bilateral cooperation.
